| The blackberry bloom has begun. Carniolan worker on the first bloom. |
With the bad weather and Charlie and Matthew being at a school camping trip, we went three weeks between hive checks. Not a good thing. Luckily nothing seems to have gone wrong.
Thistle and Clover both are doing well, lots of eggs and larvae, though we didn't see either queen. Clover didn't have any supersedure or swarm cells, while Thistle had quite a few, which we squished. Clover needs another brood box, those Carniolans are egg laying machines!
Part of Hannah's Study Grant is she has to capture a swarm or split a hive. Her hive had an abundance of swarm cells, one frame had about seven. She pulled that frame along with two more frames of eggs and brood, a frame of honey along with a frame of honey from one of our hives and placed them into a nuc box (5 frame hive box). She will go back in a week (or two) and check and see if the queen has hatched and been mated. I am excited to watch how this turns out.
After we took care of the bees we moved the cows to a new pasture area, there was actual cow frolicking. I wish I had gotten a video of it, there is nothing like seeing a cow kick up her hooves.
