Quick hive visit

weather: overcast, light breeze, 65°

Popped open Thistle to replace the frame of nectar we took out, on loan to Hannah's split.  The girls were very calm, lots of bees chaining = happy bees, so I paused to take a few pictures with my phone.

Added a third brood box to Clover, moved two frames from the second box to the third and placed empty frames on the outside of second. The were a bit more prickly so I closed them up pretty quick.  I generally work the bees gloveless, and since this wasn't a full inspection I didn't light a smoker, still managed to get out without getting stung.  The key is moving slowly, everything slowly.

I was a little worried about Hannah's split having enough nurse/worker bees, so I took a quick peek - looks good.  Right now her hive has no foragers, but as the nurse bees and other young workers age they will become foragers (at ~22 days) and be replaced by the bees that will hatch from the frames of brood placed in the nuc (5 frame hive box), but for now they have to survive on the stores Hannah put into their nuc yesterday.
